Mets Sign K-Rod

ESPN has just reported here that the New York Mets have signed Francisco Rodriguez to a 3 year contract worth $37 million.

The contract would pay Rodriguez about $3 million more than he was offered by the Los Angeles Angels in spring training and $6 million less than Wagner’s deal with the Mets.
This is a great start to improving the team. The team’s most apparent need was a closer, and thanks to an excess of closers on the market and some great negotiating by Omar Minaya, the Mets have acquired an elite closer for a very good price.
Hopefully Omar will continue to make improvements to the bullpen by trading for a pitcher with closer experiene like Huston Street or JJ Putz.

I’ve updated the 2009 Payroll, which you can see here.
